Biography

"Dude, the ocean is like, so rad."

A rare male Veena child born in the forests of the chilly Skatay Range, the Viera that would become Marin Waveseeker was once known to his tribe as Durk Sjadarwesfv.Whisked away from the care of his village early in his youth to be trained in the ways of the Wood-Warder, young Marin was carefully taught the skills and traditions passed down through generations of his tribe's men- how to be self-sufficient, how to be independent, and, most importantly, how to uphold the Green Word. The existence of a Wood-Warder is a lonely one. Swearing off all contact with the outside world and the solitary nature of the role led Marin to often daydream about what lay beyond the vast forests of his home. Years passed, and that daydreaming became a strong sense of wanderlust- a desire to see where the rivers that flowed down from the mountains of his home flowed to.But, alas, his tribe would shun him were he to forsake the Green Word, and he knew no other life.So continued his existence as a solitary Wood-Warder, rarely visiting his home village. All that changed, however, when conflict with the Garleans started forcing refugees to cross the forests of the Skatay range. His sense of curiousity and desire to learn more about the world led him to secretly breach the oath he had upheld for decades. He began to eavesdrop on the travelers, overhearing stories told about the "sea" and the "ocean" over campfires. Through these stories, he began to learn about the world beyond his humble forest- the "forest of water" that lay at the edges of continents far from his home.Resolving to see this "forest of water" for himself, and having managed to procure many books about the ocean from the various travelers and refugees he began to come across more often fleeing Garlean rule, Durk cast aside his name and role, picking up a suitably nautical name for himself- Marin Waveseeker- and began a years-long journey across Othard to head to Limsa Lominsa- a place where he had heard hired adventurers and allowed them to live by the sea as well. Now eking out a humble existence in La Noscea, Marin often finds himself and his trusty greatsword taking on quests to keep the beaches clean and safe for everyone to appreciate- while also surfing and enjoying those beaches in his free time, off the job.

Plot Hooks

Potential scenarios to consider with Marin

Talk about the ocean elsewhere - If you can tell him about any body of water that classifies as an "ocean" or "sea", Marin will most likely give you his undivided attention. You can probably start to talk about yourself or ask him about himself after breaking the ice with an ocean-related conversation.Try to dupe him into doing something silly with the ocean as justification - Marin is extremely gullible. His current adventuring outfit (swim trunks and a loose shirt) is entirely the result of trusting a small band of Roegadyn Marauders and their advice on "appropriate armor for adventuring in Limsa, the oceanside city". This man threw away the leather armour he made for himself because he fully believed swim trunks were a better alternative protection-wise.Promise an adventure - Marin's obsessed with the ocean, yes, but he also wants to see the rest of the world and explore the continent of Eorzea. If you can successfully convince him (not hard) that Southern Thanalan has a "sea" of sand, Marin will follow you to the Gold Saucer and beyond.Make friends with him - Marin may be a quirky man with strange interests, but beyond that, he is also a very lonely man who has forsaken his home at his core. Reach out to him with the promise of friendship and he will be open to having a pleasant conversation with you. Probably. You might want to mention the ocean first, though.
